Project Overview

Our laboratory is providing advanced flood modeling expertise and technical support to the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) in their comprehensive climate resilience initiative for Thailand. Through this collaboration, we are contributing cutting-edge hydrological and hydraulic modeling capabilities to strengthen Thailand’s capacity to address climate-induced flooding. Our technical partnership with ADPC and Thai government agencies focuses on developing evidence-based approaches for climate adaptation in two critical river basins, combining our modeling expertise with local stakeholder knowledge.

Our Role in Achieving Project Objectives

Our team is supporting ADPC’s initiative by developing high-resolution flood hazard maps for two strategically important river basins: the Kok River Basin in Chiang Rai Province and the Tapi River Basin in Surat Thani Province. These areas were selected due to their vulnerability to flooding and regional economic importance. Our primary technical contribution involves implementing cutting-edge hydrological and hydraulic modeling techniques to assess flood risks under multiple future climate scenarios spanning the 2040s, 2060s, and 2080s. Additionally, our work emphasizes integrating nature-based solutions for urban flood resilience and providing technical support for evidence-based decision-making in long-term climate adaptation planning.

Specialized Modeling Approaches

Our laboratory is addressing the unique challenges each target basin presents through specialized modeling approaches. For the Kok River Basin in Chiang Rai, our team is incorporating transboundary analysis by modeling upstream influences from Myanmar, recognizing that effective flood management requires understanding cross-border water flow impacts and considering international cooperation frameworks. For the Tapi River Basin in Surat Thani, our modeling work integrates sea level rise projections and coastal flood hazard assessment, including storm surge and tidal influence modeling to analyze compound flooding scenarios where river and coastal flooding may occur simultaneously.

Expected Outcomes and Deliverables

Through our collaboration with ADPC, we will produce comprehensive flood hazard maps covering present-day baseline conditions and future projections across all target timeframes and scenarios. Our maps will detail multiple flood parameters including depth, velocity, extent, and duration where feasible. Our team will also provide detailed technical documentation describing our modeling methodologies, calibration and validation approaches, and climate scenario analysis with practical recommendations for flood risk management. We are also contributing to stakeholder engagement through technical presentations at knowledge transfer sessions with government agencies and capacity building workshops, helping develop decision-support tools specifically designed for urban and regional planners.

Long-term Impact and Laboratory Contribution

Our collaboration with ADPC extends beyond immediate flood mapping to building institutional capacity and establishing frameworks for ongoing climate risk assessment. By combining our laboratory’s technical expertise with ADPC’s regional knowledge and local stakeholder involvement, we are helping create a foundation for sustainable climate adaptation planning. The high-resolution flood maps and technical methodologies our team is developing through this partnership will serve as valuable resources for future urban development, infrastructure planning, and disaster risk reduction efforts across Thailand.

Advancing Agriculture, Climate, Environmental, and Disaster Monitoring Through Satellite-Based Soil Moisture Retrieval and Applications in South East Asia

This workshop is focused on enhancing the understanding and utilization of satellite-based soil moisture data, particularly in the context of climate, agriculture, and disaster risk management. It aims to raise awareness among stakeholders in South East Asia about the significance of satellite-based soil moisture data, its applications, and the necessity of calibration and validation efforts to improve data accuracy.
