Enhancing Agricultural Water Use Efficiency with Geospatial Technology

 

To optimize agricultural water use efficiency in Thailand, ALICE-LAB is collaborating with GISTDA (Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency) on a sophisticated geospatial project. Acknowledging water as a critical but finite resource , this initiative focuses on precision monitoring of crop water requirements to ensure sustainable agricultural development. The project, titled “Enhancing Agricultural Water Use Efficiency with Geospatial Technology,” utilizes data from multiple satellite platforms, including MODIS, Landsat 8/9, and Sentinel-2, integrated with ground-based meteorological inputs to calculate precise Crop Evapotranspiration (ET) values.

Building upon previous work on rice and durian cultivation areas from 2025, this current phase extends its scope to six major economic crops across the nation, including maize, cassava, sugarcane, mango, coconut, and longan. The core objectives involve conducting satellite data assessments for ET calculation, developing geospatial models using standard equations like Penman-Monteith and SEBAL, and implementing a robust, dynamic crop water use monitoring and alert system. The technical workflow encompasses data ingestion, cloud masking, gap filling, and model validation with rigorous quality control to deliver high-confidence data for plot-level analysis. Final deliverables include comprehensive reports and source code, designed to support daily monitoring and economic assessments of agricultural water use throughout Thailand.
